This year’s selection for the BLOOM competition section explores the concept of ‘community’ through the works of emerging filmmakers presenting their debut or sophomore features. Beyond the universal human need for belonging and the isolating forces of our times, the selection examines paths toward collective action, responsibility, and healing, while seeking to expose the often invisible, violent mechanisms of power structures. The section and the filmmakers also celebrate the act of revelation and making the unseen visible: the opportunity to amplify quieter voices and provide a platform for those whom history - and we, as human beings - repeatedly attempt to suppress, silence, and erase.

Experimental Cinema - Greetings from the blurred edge
BIFF pays close attention to contemporary filmmakers who boldly expand the horizons of the medium of film and experiment with new cinematic languages. In this strand, we curate a selection of works that offer a deeper insight into these artistic laboratories, enriching our viewers with cinematic experiences that disrupt traditional narrative structures, help us break out of our comfort zones and redefine the possibilities of cinema.
The Making of an American Myth: New Cinematic Forms of the Frontier
The 2026 BIFF retrospective explores the stories of the frontier and its reimagined mythology. Forest clearings, crumbling settlements, and endless wheat fields become stages for lives shaped by labour, migration, and quiet ambition. Communities form and dissolve in the sweep of weather and time, their futures always uncertain, always contingent.
These works abandon the heroic grammar of the classical Western, tracing instead a cinema of atmosphere, rhythm, and lingering presence. In their careful attention to the shaping of social worlds, they echo our own moment in time: landscapes and resources in flux, communities and borders constantly contested. The frontier lingers, not as myth, but as a cinematic reflection of worlds still taking shape.
