All We Imagine As Light

India (2024)

all we imagine as light, biff, budapest international film festival

Film description

Prabha, in her thirties, works as a nurse in Mumbai. Although she hasn't spoken to her husband, who is working in Germany, for years, doubts keep her wondering and prevent her from moving on. Her roommate, Anu, is younger than her, and though she tries in vain to enjoy freedom with her lover, their differences in faith make it difficult for their relationship to be fulfilled. Leaving the big city and the hustle of everyday life behind, they travel to an island with their third companion, the widow Parvaty, to face their greatest fears: grief, letting go, and acceptance. Director Payal Kapadia's magnificent film is the first Indian film in thirty years to debut in the Cannes Competition, where it won the Grand Jury Prize.

About the Director

Payal Kapadia

Payal Kapadia is a Mumbai-based filmmaker and artist. She studied film direction at the Film and Television Institute of India. Her work, as she describes it, is set on a blurred line that is not easily visible, hidden somewhere in the folds of memory and dreams. In the small, ephemeral gestures of women, she tries to find the truth that constitutes her practical world. In 2017, Afternoon Clouds was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in the Cinefondation selection; in 2018, And What is the Summer Saying, an experimental documentary, had its world premiere at the Berlinale Shorts. The latter won the Special Jury Prize at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival the same year. Prior to her feature debut this year at Cannes, she was awarded the Best Documentary prize in Cannes for A Night of Knowing Nothing in 2021, a political manifesto with a very personal tone. This is how Kapadia came to All We Imagine As Light, which, after winning the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, is currently making its rounds on the festival circuit around the world.
