The Echo

El Eco - Mexico, Germany (2023)

the echo, biff, budapest international film festival

Film description

El Eco is a remote little village in Puebla, in the Mexican highlands, where women control the course of life, while men mostly just disappear and reappear in the shadow of the jobs they do for drug cartels. The villagers’ living conditions vary drastically with the seasons, as children herd sheep, raise animals, and care for the elderly. Battling frost and drought, they learn to cope with illness and death, understanding their roles within the family and the community. El Eco is an engaging film about nature, inner reflection, self-discovery and coming of age, and the nurturing power of community. In the words of director Tatiana Huezo, this is a film about “rebelling against life and falling in love with life".

About the Director

Tatiana Huezo

She is an artist of harsh female realities, profound lyricism and heavy silences. Tatiana Huezo was born in San Salvador in 1972 and moved to Mexico with her family when she was four, where she still resides. Her first film, El lugar más pequeño (The Tiniest Place), a documentary about the civil war in El Salvador, won her several international awards. In Tempestad (2016), she tells the story of two women whose lives are defined in one way or another by human trafficking in Mexico. In 2021, her first feature film, Noche de Fuego (Prayer for the Stolen), was released, following the lives of three Mexican teenage girls far from the big cities, who live their daily lives amidst dangers and idyllic moments. El Eco is the latest work by one of the most innovative new voices in contemporary Mexican cinema.
